Original 0il painting by Astley Maberly There is an intangible feeling that descends upon you when walking in the untouched wilderness and the pristine areas of the Great Zambezi Valley. This particular walk, up the Chewore River toward Mariatstoro Spring is classic Africa! So many times we have walked up this riverbed and as you do a sense of freedom descends upon you, freedom from the chains of society and the material world! Perhaps it’s the knowing that we are in a place where the man made rules dont apply only the laws of nature, and the humbling understanding that we are way down the food chain, or perhaps it’s a knowing that we are simply “home“ out here. This Painting is about two families, four brothers who have been separated by this world and the next, it has been done as a reminder that the life we have led and the family we have had is second to none, and there are no words to describe the privilege it has been to be a part of this all. Four great Tuskers, four baobabs, four palm trees , quintessential to Africa this represents who we are! And as the waters of the spring flow northward to the mighty Zambezi, along the dried sand, forging new channels it reminds us of how we forge on without our loved ones when they leave for the other world. Today on this October afternoon the sun lowers in the sky, these elephant walk purposefully northward, their minds completely in the present!, the Baboons insist as always on being a part of our lives while the Carmine bee eaters flit and roll through the sky, their beautiful colours contrasting against this epic scene of the dried October Bush The scene is Classic, its totally Africa! And we have been spoilt beyond means to have lived with our families in a place like this. We share a bond unknown to many with this special place and Our children now have this relationship with the wild as well May this Painting be energy for you, soon we will walk these sands of these rivers again, and the myths and legends and the whispering of the ancients will talk to you, and the tapestry that is Africa will fit snugly over our shoulders once again One of the Greatest privileges in life is freedom! Tread lightly Astley Maberly .
